Driving in fog is never fun as it creates dangerous driving conditions, especially if it’s really heavy or accompanied by other harsh weather conditions.
In an ideal world, you wake up in the morning and notice a thick blanket of fog, so you decide not to get on the road in the first place. You text your boss telling them that you’re going to be late or delay whatever appointment you had to ensure your safety.
However, if you were driving in great weather conditions and all of a sudden you find yourself caught in the cloud, here are some tips for you that will tell you exactly what to do:
Table of Contents
1. Turn On Your Fog Lights
The first thing you need to do is turn on your fog lights for they are specifically designed for this situation. I mean, you could be fined for using them in general, but they are actually perfect for awful weather conditions such as fog, rain, snow, dust, or even a mild sandstorm.
Some old cars might not have front fog lights, but all modern cars these days have rear fog lights as it is a legal requirement almost everywhere in the world.
You can find the switch located on the dashboard, a steering wheel stalk, or by the headlight controls, and if you don’t seem to figure out where it’s located, look through your car’s manual.
Keep your fog lights on for the whole time until the weather clears off.
2. Stop At A Gas Station
Driving in fog is unrecommended and if you can stay home then it would be perfect. But if you’re already on your way somewhere, then your errand can wait.
Pull into the next gas station you stumble upon and wait there until the fog clears a bit. Have a coffee or something else to drink as you might wait for an hour or so until you can continue your journey worry-free.
3. Slow Down
You cannot drive at 120 km/h when it’s foggy because that’s not only unsafe for you the driver, but it is also irresponsible and dangerous for everyone on the road.
Don’t even think about driving your normal speed limit on any road when it is foggy. You should go as low as 50 km/h and if the fog is very dense and thick, then consider slowing down to 40km/h.
Allow for extra time to reach your destination and don’t feel rushed at all. Slow down, everything can wait because your safety always comes first.
4. Stick to Low Beam Headlights
Although it might seem logical to go for the option that gives you more light and further illumination, but when visibility is less than 150 meters ahead, driving with high beams is very dangerous. The light can reflect off water particles bouncing back at you and reducing visibility even more. Additionally, it can dazzle any oncoming traffic and motorists this same way.
So, when driving in fog, make sure you’re using low-beam headlights because with your taillights also on, it can make it clear to cars in front of you and behind you that you are there.
5. Turn on Your Heater
When it’s foggy and cool outside, you might experience condensation buildup inside your car. So, you may want to turn your heater on as soon as you get into your car to keep the windows clear and avoid anything that will make visibility even worse for you.
6. Try Not to Change Lanes
When you’re caught in the cloud, you cannot do many things. Actually, you can only do a few things, like drive and pay attention to your surroundings.
Changing lanes is one of the things that you shouldn’t do unless you really have to. Otherwise, you can easily get into a car accident if you keep moving between lanes not keeping in mind that motorists behind you might not be able to see you.
7. Keep Your Distance
On a good day, you should maintain a 2-second distance between you and the car in front of you, but reduced visibility leads to longer braking times. So, on a foggy day, a 5-second distance is what you need to be aiming for.
If you want to sell any car in the UAE and get a good price for it, you need to protect the value of the car.
All of the above tips are great for driving in foggy weather conditions and avoiding the trouble that comes with it. If you follow these tips, are careful, and pay enough attention to the road, then you should be good.
But do you know what’s even better than acing the foggy car drive challenge? Well, that’ll be taking your best precautionary measure and staying home in the first place.
