One of the major issues for anyone within the Appraisal industry is both value and security. From the very beginning of the invention of cars up until now, the need to secure your vehicle has been an issue, and through various methods such as the introduction of VIN, this issue is being taken care of. You shouldn’t stress too much about your car since you can determine your car value by VIN, and it has all the vital information.

The VIN is an abbreviation which means “Vehicle Identification Number” and is a unique identifier given to a particular car for identification purposes. Just like in humans where no 2 individuals can ever have the same fingerprint, no 2 cars can ever have the same VIN number, and that helps in making the vehicles distinct enough to be identified. The VIN number system had to be created when cars were manufactures in quantities exceeding 500.

Initially, the VIN number was merely a serial number showing the order of production of a particular vehicle, but this was not good enough as mistakes were made by several companies, having different car models but the same VIN number, and this caused a lot of confusion. As time advanced, the VIN took another form and this time, manufacturers also encoded the manufacturer code, year and model so that it stands apart from the VIN of other manufacturers. With this new system, it made it a lot easier to identify cars/vehicles using the VIN,and it became a handy resource for both the manufacturers and the Car owners. The system seemed very good until it was defective again due to a lack of supervision on how the VIN number was created and companies stilled overlapped in having the same data on their unique identifier. This made it impossible to use only the VIN to identify a car.

After taking up several forms and systems, in 1981, the VIN number was made standard. A 17-character VIN number was made which it made possible for each manufacturer to have a genuinely unique number without fear of having an overlap no matter the situation. Now, cars can be identified solely with the VIN number as well as their key features. The number is also used by manufacturers, car owners and even law enforcement agencies to identify and track down vehicles. The VIN number is not a secret number that is hidden out of sight anymore, many manufacturers have started printing it on several parts of their cars to enable it to be seen quickly. Even after a very terrible accident or damage, you can still have a chance at knowing the number to identify your vehicle. However, you will need to know this number by heart or have it on a legal document such as your vehicle registration document just in case they are required for legal matters.

As you have read, the essence of this number is also to determine a car value by VIN. The use case of this unique identifier is broad, but the Auto Appraisal Network can use it do extract the cost of a car model and calculate a worth for the vehicle.
