The Cause of Engine Oil Leakage

The oil used in cars plays a significant role in the best running condition of your vehicle. You might notice a small puddle of oil under your car, blue smoke coming out of your tailpipe or feel the burnt smell coming from your car engine. These are all clear indicators that your vehicle needs attention.

Apart from oil leaks, there are some other types of car fluid leaks that occur –

Brake Fluid Leak –

An oily patch near the passenger side seat or around your car’s wheels that is has a clear to the brown colour indicated brake fluid to be leaking.

Steering Fluid Leak –

The Steering fluid leak is the thin brown or red colour fluid that is found around the front area of the car.

Antifreeze Fluid Leak –

A patch of yellow, pink, or green coloured fluid around or under the car is the indicator of antifreeze leakage in the vehicle.

Transmission Fluid Leak –

A thick patch of brown or red fluid around the mid-section of your car when it is in the stationary state could be the indication of transmission fluid leak.

Water Leak –

Water leakage is often found underneath the car. It could be a small pool of clear and odourless liquid, the water that leaks from the car.

Leakage that is left unattended will cause the vehicle to not work properly, cause stains on the driveway and could even be an environmental hazard. The risk of catching fire in the engine compartment and catastrophic engine failure at the worst possible time is some of the major risks of oil leakage.

The main factors for oil leakage could be –

Worn Out Gaskets and Oil Pans

Oil is added to the engine for the lubrication. It is pumped by a pan and gasket that is located at the bottom of the engine. While driving the vehicle on road, the gravel and other debris can cause damage to the pan and gasket. It causes the oil to leak eventually.

Improperly Installed Engine Oil Components

The engine oil could also leak if the engine oil component is not installed properly. If the oil pan and gasket are fitted too tight or if the oil filter is fitted loosely – the oil from the engine will leak and starts flowing into the engine.

Defective Valve Seals and Rings

The damage to the valve seals and ring fitted in the engine oil system will also lead to small oil leaks.

The point to note is that the engine oil leakage does not happen only when the car is parked. It can also occur when the car is moving and the heat from the engine will burn up the leaking oil. The damage caused by the leaking of the oil could be minor – as to engine component damage to major such as the overhauling the entire vehicle engine.
